# 8s4h — eight-four offsuit

**Fold from every position when the pot is unopened.** 8s4h ranks 148 of the 169 distinct starting hands
(top 85.5%). Against one random hand it wins
36.62% of showdowns and takes 39.35% of the pot.

## What this hand is

Eight-four offsuit. Before any board card is dealt its odds are identical to
8c4d, 8c4h, 8c4s, 8d4c, 8d4h, 8d4s, 8h4c, 8h4d, 8h4s, 8s4c, 8s4d — suits are interchangeable pre-flop, so all
12 combinations in class 84o share the numbers below.
That stops being true the moment the board has suits, which is what the paid
record covers.

## Equity against random opponents

| Opponents | Win % | Tie % | Pot equity % |
| --------- | ----- | ----- | ------------ |
| 1 | 36.62 | 5.45 | 39.35 |
| 2 | 22.60 | 3.66 | 24.23 |
| 3 | 16.04 | 3.10 | 17.41 |
| 4 | 12.17 | 2.81 | 13.42 |
| 5 | 9.68 | 2.63 | 10.85 |
| 6 | 7.96 | 2.46 | 9.05 |
| 7 | 6.78 | 2.32 | 7.80 |

Monte Carlo, 400,000 trials per row, seed 1 —
same seed, same digits. "Pot equity" counts outright wins plus a share of split
pots, which is the number to compare against pot odds.

## Head-to-head, exact

Against the opponent's whole hand class, not one chosen pair of cards: every
combination of it you do not block, each enumerated over all 1,712,304
boards. No sampling. "Combos" is how many were averaged.

| Against | Hero pot equity % | Hero win % | Split % | Combos |
| ------- | ----------------- | ---------- | ------- | ------ |
| AA | 14.00 | 13.81 | 0.38 | 6 |
| KK | 13.86 | 13.66 | 0.40 | 6 |
| QQ | 13.98 | 13.78 | 0.40 | 6 |
| JJ | 13.75 | 13.55 | 0.42 | 6 |
| TT | 13.49 | 13.25 | 0.48 | 6 |
| 77 | 28.74 | 28.21 | 1.06 | 6 |
| 22 | 47.28 | 46.00 | 2.56 | 6 |
| AKs | 32.30 | 32.05 | 0.48 | 4 |
| AKo | 33.92 | 33.69 | 0.46 | 12 |
| AQs | 32.34 | 32.10 | 0.48 | 4 |
| JTs | 30.20 | 29.62 | 1.17 | 4 |
| 76s | 51.66 | 49.27 | 4.78 | 4 |

Averaging matters here. Against a single representative the answer shifts with
the suits — J♣T♣ takes 17.77% against Q♣Q♦ but 18.89% against Q♠Q♦, because the
shared club both blocks a flush and removes cards. Averaged over the class the
figure is the same whichever suits you hold, which is what makes it quotable.

## What this page cannot tell you

Pre-flop equity is not a strategy. It ignores stack depth, bet sizing, and how
your opponents actually play. The verdict above is a conventional opening chart,
not solver output. Equity against a random hand is also not equity against a
range: an opponent who raises has better than random cards, and this page does
not model that.
