Aces vs a small pair: the odds

What are the odds of pocket aces against a small pocket pair?

Hand Cards Wins Equity
Pocket aces A♥ A♦ 81.3% 81.6%
Pocket fives 5♥ 5♦ 18.2% 18.4%
Split pot 0.49%

All-in before the flop, with five cards to come. Equity is each hand's average share of the pot — outright wins plus half of the split pots. Computed by enumerating all 1,712,304 possible boards with this site's own engine, so these are exact figures rather than a simulation.

Why the number looks like that

Barely different from aces against kings, which surprises people. A small pair is not much worse off than a big one — it still wins by hitting its own rank — and against aces specifically it loses only a sliver of equity because its straight chances are slightly worse.
